How to download a GEDCOM file

  1. Sign in to your Ancestry.com account.
  2. Open your tree: Go to the “Trees” tab and select the tree you'd like to export. NOTE: You must be the tree owner to download it, not just an editor. You do not have to have an active paying subscription to access your tree.)
  3. Access tree settings: Click the More (... elipses) icon, then select Tree Settings.
  4. Export the tree: Scroll to the “Manage your tree” section and click Export tree.
  5. Generate the GEDCOM file: Click Export to begin the process.
  6. Download: Once the file is ready, click Download Your GEDCOM File.
  7. Save the file to your device. The file will be named after your tree with a “.ged” extension and usually appears in your Downloads folder.
  8. Send the file to us: Email the GEDCOM file to us as an attachment to support@rootweavers.com

My Heritage

  1. Log in to your MyHeritage account.
  2. Navigate to your tree: Hover over “Family Tree” in the top menu and select Manage Trees.
  3. Select your tree: Locate the tree you’d like to download.
  4. Export to GEDCOM: Click Export to GEDCOM next to the tree’s name.
  5. Choose export options: You’ll have the option to include photos—select your preference.
  6. Begin the export: Click Begin the export to start the process.
  7. Download: Once complete, the GEDCOM file will be downloaded to your device.
  8. Send the file to us: Email the GEDCOM file to us as an attachment to support@rootweavers.com
